Led by Lived Experience: Participation and Self-Advocacy with AAC

Description

Communication is about more than generating messages. It is about participating fully in conversations, relationships, education, work, and community life. In this engaging and practical course, Bradley Heaven and Daniel O’Connor of All Access Life share real-world strategies drawn from their lived experiences with AAC, advocacy, employment, public speaking, relationships, and everyday interactions.

As part of our 5th Annual Winter Conference, we are excited to feature this newsession highlighting practical strategies and lived experiences that demonstrate how AAC can support fuller participation in the activities, roles, and communities that matter most.

Through personal stories, practical examples, and video demonstrations, learners will explore strategies for managing conversation pace and interruptions, advocating for communication preferences, contributing to group discussions, and creating more supportive communication environments. Bradley and Daniel offer perspectives for both AAC users and communication partners, with a focus on increasing independence, self-expression, and meaningful participation.

Upon successful completion of this course, learners will be able to:

  • Apply communication strategies to support efficiency and improve participation in everyday interactions.
  • Implement tools and techniques to manage conversations and navigate communication challenges.
  • Demonstrate strategies for presenting and participating in group communication activities.
  • Identify communication preferences and self-advocacy strategies to support successful interactions.
