How do I free up space for Windows Updates on my Indi?

June 04, 2019

The Microsoft Redstone 6 update requires a minimum of 32 GB of free disk space to install. This requirement may be an
issue for 64 GB Indi and Indi 7 devices that have Snap Core First, Communicator 5, and Compass installed. If you
attempt to update to Redstone 6 and get an error message stating that there is not enough free space, we recommend
trying the options below.

Option 1: Connect an External Drive
The external drive must be 10 GB or larger. Make sure you’ve backed up and deleted all files from the external
storage device before you use it for updating.

  1. Connect your external drive (USB thumb drive or similar). Wait a few seconds and it will appear in the drop down list.
  2. Select Next.
  3. If the drive offers enough free space, a green check mark will appear next to the storage drive icon. Select Continue to install the update. If the drive does not offer enough free space, either try another, larger external drive or proceed to Option 2 below.

Option 2: Free Up Space
  1. Select I don’t want to use external storage.
  2. Next to Recycle Bin, select Open.
  3. Delete all files in the Recycle Bin and close the Recycle Bin window.
  4. Next to Downloads, select Open.
  5. Delete all files or just the largest files in the Downloads folder and close the Downloads window.
  6. Next to Storage Use, select Open.
  7. Select Temporary files.
  8. Select the check boxes to choose which files to delete. All of the files listed are safe to delete, so go ahead and select all of them.
  9. Select Remove Files. When the removal process has finished, close the window.
  10. Select Refresh. If disk cleanup was able to create enough free space, you’ll be able to proceed with the update. If not, continue to option 3 below.

Option 3: Uninstall Compass Device Data
Before you begin this option, make sure that you back up any Compass content that you want to keep. It is preferable to save your backups to myTobiiDynavox.com or a USB drive, so that the backup files are not taking up space on your device.
  1. Select the Notifications icon in the Windows taskbar.
  2. Select All Settings.
  3. Select Apps.
  4. In the list of apps, select Compass Device Data.
  5. Select Uninstall.
  6. Select Uninstall again to confirm.
  7. Go back to the Windows 10 Update window and select Refresh. If you have created enough free space, you’ll be able to proceed with the update. If not, repeat the steps above, opting to uninstall the Tobii Dynavox Compass app in step 4. This will delete Compass from your device, so you will need to demo Compass on a different device going forward. If, after deleting both the Compass Device Data and the Compass app there is still not enough free space, continue to option 4 below.

Option 4: Factory Reset
Before you begin this option, make sure that you back up any files that you want to keep. Save your files to the
cloud or a USB drive, not on your Indi.
  1. Select the Notifications icon in the Windows taskbar.
  2. Select All Settings.
  3. Select Update & Security.
  4. Select Recovery.
  5. In the Reset this PC section, select Get started.
  6. Select Remove everything.
  7. Select Just remove my files.
  8. Select Reset.
  9. Select OK or Agree on any pop ups that appear as the device goes through the factory reset process.
